• About Carson Petocz, Student Counselor Intern

My hope in counseling is to create a place where you can safely say the things you’ve never said out loud. You may have carried it by yourself for years, waiting for a moment you felt ready to say it. It takes courage to start talking, and you don’t need the right words ready before you start.

I am currently pursuing my Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Liberty University. As a practicum student, I receive ongoing supervision in caring for my clients under the direction of Christy Birgen, M.A., LPC-S, LMFT-S.

I’m drawn to working with teens and adults living with shame, that feeling you’re one honest conversation away from being seen differently. Shame rarely announces itself. It usually shows up as anxiety, as pulling away from people, or as unwanted patterns that someone has tried to stop more times than they can count. I’m also interested in working with people who are wrestling with questions about identity, purpose, meaning, relationships, and how their experiences have shaped the way they see themselves and the world around them.

I have received training in premarital counseling for couples who want to build a stronger foundation for their marriage.

My approach to counseling is grounded in person-centered and existential perspectives, which means I want to understand the person underneath the behavior before we address the pattern. I believe counseling can be a place to slow down, be honest about what is going on, and explore what you actually want your life to look like. As a Christian counselor, I am open to integrating faith into counseling when it is meaningful to you and fits your goals for counseling.

Before counseling, I earned my B.S. in Psychology at Texas A&M and volunteered as an EMT during the COVID pandemic, meeting people on some of the hardest days of their lives. I also spent several years working as a teen camp director, where I learned to take teenagers seriously because what they’re carrying is as real as anything an adult brings to counseling. Those experiences taught me the importance of being present with people when life is difficult and creating a space where they can be honest about what they are experiencing.

I am married and value the relationships and community that have shaped who I am. I know that relationships can be some of the most meaningful parts of our lives, but they can also be places where hurt, shame, and misunderstanding become difficult to navigate. I want to help you work through those difficulties while also recognizing the strengths and possibilities that are already present in your life.

I believe anyone can find new freedom, and I want to offer a space where that becomes possible. You do not have to have everything figured out before you come to counseling. Sometimes you just need a place to start saying what you have been carrying.

It would be an honor to walk alongside you.
